Artificial Intelligence and Indian Moon Mission, Chandrayan-2

There’ s is no contradiction in the fact that we are living in an era where the technology has become less artificial and more intelligent. Today the scope is far away from what humans have or can imagine about artificial intelligence. We all explored AI applications in daily life to unlock mobile through facial recognition, asking Alexa to order pizza and many more. Would it be strange to know that AI applications and its utilization now taking over space (INDIAN MOON MISSION - CHANDRAYAAN-2, for instance)?

Use of AI in the construction of Chandrayan-2

Indian Moon Mission-Chandrayaan 2 comprises of three-module spacecraft consists of a lander, an orbiter, and a rover. The probe’s total mass weight is around 3.8 tons. The lunar spacecraft's Vikram Lander is devised to execute India’s first soft landing on the lunar surface. Also, it has a six-wheeled Pragyan Rover that is astonished by Artificial Intelligence. These wheels operate on DC motors and there are two DC motors in an individual wheel. It constitutes an Alpha Particle Induced X-ray spectroscope which will observe the configuration of the elements near the landing site and examine them. 


In the second mission of India to the moon, Chandrayan-2, the artificial intelligence-powered rover of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will play a major role in the achievement of the mission. It is poised to make a smooth and easy landing on the southern surface of the moon in the early morning of Saturday. The rover used in it works on solar power.


Pragyan shows, how AI is helping space research?

AI-powered Pragyan rover can communicate and connect with the Lander that includes a piece of motion technology evolved by IIT Kanpur researchers. That technology will help the rover to trace water and other minerals present on the lunar surface. It will also send pictures for research and examination of the surface. The team of the researchers includes professor KA Venkatesh and Ashish Datta who developed motion technology. Ashish Datta professor of Mechanical Engineering once said,

“It took almost an entire year to establish and develop software which is based on the algorithm system. The software has been completely developed for the first time in our country and now we stand among those nations who are making the software for lunar rover”.  

The Pragyan is the only AI that has observe the speed in space research for years. Artificial intelligence and its relative technologies automatically list and determines the sources found in Sky Survey images and identify them as stars or galaxies and facilitate astronomer in making a scientific evaluation of the resultant catalogs. The ability of artificial intelligence to analyze large volumes of data and to find out correlations helps to interpret the data intelligently. ESA’s ENVISAT satellite generates 400 terabytes of data every year. The GSLV Mk-III is India’s most powerful launcher of today and it has been completely fabricated and designed within the country. 


So artificial intelligence plays a significant role in the success of the Chandrayan-2 mission.
